Speaking Tiger, New Delhi, Pp xi+215.

Devaki Jain is the wife of late L C Jain, a renowned Gandhian Economist, mother of Srinivasan Jain of NDTV, daughter of Late M A Srinivasan, an highly exalted civil servant of Mysore Maharaja's era and who also became a Dewan( equivalent to present day Chief Minister) of Gwalior and member of Constituent Assembly that drafted the Constitution of India. Devaki herself is a highly regarded Feminist Economist and title of some of her books partially defines her: The Journey of Southern Feminist, Close Encounters of Another Kind: Women and Development Economics, Women, Development and the UN. Yet it tells very little of her as a whole person, her travails and struggles to reach what she is now at the age of 87 years. Her present book, a memoir, is an attempt to portray just that.

Devaki is in a way one of those who contributed significantly to the policies and programs of India immediately after the Independence in her chosen area. Her reach was equally global. Her painstaking work concern marginalised and exploited, so called, she hates that word, "informal" workers especially women of the world, the Southerner who is historically Colonised by the Northerner, a Coloniser. She went on to say the issues of a Southerner female is different from that of Northerner and hence different policies are required to meet them. In fact, she even said that the models of women that we have like the panchamahakanyas - Ahalya, Tara, Sita, Draupati and Mandodari - as the most ethical, dutiful and subservient persons is not the only model, and there are also women like Gargi, an ancient Philosopher, Avaiyar, a Tamil poet and scholar, Amrapali, a cultured and worldly courtesan, and others.

Her work took her to associate herself personally with the giants of that era: Jaya Praksh Narayan(JP), Vinoba Bhave, Ram Manohar Lohia, Julius Nyriere, Desmond Tutu, Iris Murdoch, Amartya Sen, K N Raj, ( Delhi School of Economics), just to mention only a few, leaving out many literary figures, social activist, educationist and others of the kind with whom she had close contact.

Early part of the book gives us a vivid picture of her growing up as girl in the late 1930's and forties under a towering and loving father as well as the bonding she had with the other members of the family. She travelled along different villages with her father on a horseback as that was the only mode of transport then. She herself learnt horse riding, cycling and riding on elephant unlike the girls of the era! Those periods are full of joy and freedom which she fully utilised and enjoyed. However, it soon came to an end when her choices made in her full freedom, especially in choosing a marital partner, was totally opposed by her father and all members of the family, and her father literally showing her the door; the reconcile, if at all, that took was after a much too longer time.

Since then till the 1960's perhaps, it was a harrowing time for her. Alone in foreign land with no money but with a strong desire to study in Oxford, meeting all sort of people for funding and research, few of her contacts being mean and ugly, often no place to sleep even, eating namesake foods, and yet slowly inching her way with only her determination as companion, graduated from Oxford, getting great appreciation for her original works from all the teachers, mentors and educational administrators. The world opened at last to unfold her talents. Her narration is very vivid, deeply touching, and some of her very personal and intimate events depicted

were brutally honest and candid!

My own brief acquaintance with her was when she was nominated by the Chancellor as member of the Bangalore University Syndicate during my term as its Vice Chancellor(2002-2006). (Incidentally, the composition of that Syndicate was unique and true to the spirit and letters of the University Act 2000 wherein only eminent educationist and professionals are to be nominated. I was one of the first VC under the new Act and I must compliment Sri. S M Krishna as Chief Minister, Dr Parameshwar as Education Minister and I think Smt. Ramadevi as Chancellor who sent such eminent persons as retired Professors, retired DGP, renowned business men, Head of an highly accomplished NGO. Alas, that was the first and the last time, Syndicate of the subsequent years consisted nominated members who were party workers and the likes where eminence of any kind were never to be found!).

She used to attend every Syndicate meeting, once she even invited members to her house in Malleswaram, and yet I missed knowing her as much as her Memoir portrayed now. Our meetings then were purely business like. At the end of her term as Syndicate member, while she was leaving, she presented me her friend Amartya Sen's just released big book "The Argumentative Indian", a marvellous work dealing with Indian History, Culture and Identity; I enjoyed thoroughly reading that book. Devaki Jain's book "The Brass Notebook - A Memoir" too I equally enjoyed reading although it belonged to a different genre than that of Sen's. Her book reads like a fast paced Novel!

Thimmappa’shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07379292651026338024noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8103373982980206495.post-59032491202538836812020-10-01T23:01:00.000-07:002020-10-01T23:01:55.792-07:00Mahatma Gandhi's 151st Birth Anniversary 2020.HAPPY GANDHI JAYANTI

Mahatma Gandhi was a man who walked his talk. A congruent person whose thoughts, feelings and actions were one. Even his physical appearance was a symbol of what all he stood for. He wore just a two sheets of cloth, one for the upper body and the other, the lower, symbolising simplicity and self reliance as the clothes were woven by hand not using any huge machines that would undermine human labour and dignity. Same with his footwear: hand and home made. He holds a pole taller than him symbolising ideals that must be higher than ourselves on which to stand and move.

A few talk of Gandhi's simplicity especially in food costed more than normal and even questioned his honesty as he used to eat fruits aside while on hunger strike. It is an unfair remark, if not based on ignorance. There are several types of fasting depending on the purpose and celestial constellation, and one such type is fasting from grains which he always followed, i.e. fasting by eating only fruits. Similarly, the food he ate in normal times suited eminently the mission he undertook, the latter must be the priority. The nuts and beans, uncooked, containing high quality nutrients that can withstand the rigors of long walks and meetings, as it is convenient too.

It is indeed an astounding phenomenon that our country and the world witnessed a man like Mahatma Gandhi.
Thimmappa’shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07379292651026338024noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8103373982980206495.post-1469918358701689512020-09-04T04:27:00.004-07:002020-09-04T05:13:12.707-07:00TEACHERS DAY
HAPPY TEACHERS DAY - SEPTEMBER 5, 2020.

Role of Teachers:

Three T's characterise teachers role.

The first T is to Transmit information to his pupils. This is undoubtedly one of the major functions of a teacher. But, if the teacher restricts only to the transmission of information, it would be poor teaching. In this internet age there are better ways and means to obtain information much better way than from teacher's in the class room.

The second T is Transact, referring to interaction with the pupils, establish two way communication through discussion, question and answers and getting frequent feedbacks from students about how he/she has received the information. For, it is not how well the teacher has taught, the preparations of material, presentation with modern teaching aids, the language and diction facility one has - of course they are all most important - but what is even more important is how it has reached the pupils, and that can be obtained through periodic feedbacks. Sustaining pupil's attention and interest, to reach out to pupil's level with different examples that suits the pupil, all comes into play here. This is far better than the first T.

The third T is Transform. This is the ultimate goal of the teacher. What use is the information, however well communicated if it does not change him/her for a better person in perception and action. Transform the pupil to what he/she truly is. It involves the teacher along with pupil to help discover pupil's real talents, his/her unique qualities, and develop them and help them to be it in life. This alone gives the pupil real competence with ease and fetches in the process joy, satisfaction and fulfilment. Creativity and innovation comes naturally to them.

Many have known their talents but left it undeveloped thinking that something else other than him/her true talent is better in the world or due to any other pressure. Many have discovered their true nature, developed them too, but not in it/practice in life. Perhaps they are last in what others expect of him/her. Misery and inefficiency would be the result in such cases. Lucky are those who know what they are, develop themselves fully in it and be in the same occupation in life.

There is an interesting say on pupils learning which the teachers in all their humility better know:

acaryat padamadatte padah shishya svamedaya

padam sahbrahmacaribhyo padah kalakramenaca

one quarter they learn from teachers, another quarter from his own intelligence; third quarter from co-learners, and the last quarter as the time passes.

Thimmappa’shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07379292651026338024noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8103373982980206495.post-39410817054237482832020-08-23T23:19:00.000-07:002020-08-23T23:19:45.893-07:00Building Lasting Relationship
How to build a lasting relationship:

TURN ME INTO WE.

"Which is more important", asked Big Panda, "the journey or the destination?"

"The company" said the Tiny Dragon.
Thimmappa’shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07379292651026338024noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8103373982980206495.post-1016440327668251022020-08-23T03:39:00.000-07:002020-08-23T03:39:50.507-07:00Raise your words, not voice.
Raise your words, not voice. T N CHATURVEDI: THE LAST BEST OF THE LOT IS NO MORE.

I had an occasion to relate to three Chancellors, who are invariably the Governor of the State in State Universities. When I was a Registrar of Bangalore University (1996-2000), it was Kurshid Alam Khan, and when I was the Vice Chancellor (2002-2006) of the same University, it was initially V S Ramadevi (who appointed me as VC) and later on it was T N Chaturvedi. All the three of them were excellent personalities, two of them were highly accomplished bureaucrats and Ramadevi was a Lawyer. They used to call us often, enquire about the University's progress, and even gave suggestions. On the whole, they were very supportive, had lot of concern, for the cause of higher education. They all were totally apolitical while dealing with the matters of University. Once, Ramadevi even warned me to be careful about some people who are out to create troubles in the campus for their selfish ends! Perhaps it was the first, and the last, time that all the VCs of Karnataka pooled together and gave her a send off with a fabulous gift when she retired. VCs had such a high esteem and regard for her.

Chatuevedi showed such a lot of affection and respect that I was often moved by his gesture. He even wanted me to give my published papers that I think is important ones. One of the paper I gave was on drawing some insights from our ancient wisdom for the development of higher education, and he liked it so much that he said that he won't return it although I had told him it was the last reprint left with me! When he retired, he moved to New Delhi. Whenever he visited Bangalore I used to get a call from Rajbhavan, where he used to stay, for a chat. How I regret now that I did not make use of that opportunity most of the time owing to my prior engagements. We have lost him. May he attain sadgati.

All the three of them were totally uncorrupt and incorruptible as well.

How fast and rotten the things have turned out now. Subsequent men have sullied their office and the cause of higher education in karnataka almost irreparably lost . Most of the VCs appointed during the subsequent regime are facing several charges of corruption, facing enquiries and in all the cases where enquiries are completed the VCs concerned have been indicted, and against some of them even FIRs are filed and are facing imminent arrest. Corrupt Politicians and others in Power select corrupt VCs and the corrupt VCs select corrupt faculty and with the politicians in power joining hands fully in the mela, education is doomed in karnataka!

HUMAN PAR EXCELLENCE: ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYEE (1924 - 2018).

My memory goes back to 2003 when I had shared a platform with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It was the year in which Bangalore University in collaboration with ISRO had organized Indian Science Congress in the BU Campus. As is custom, the Prime Minister of India inaugurates the Congress every year. I as BU VC along with the PM, Governor T N Chaturvedi, the CM Sri S M Krishna, Vasundararaje Scindia, then Central Minister of Science and Technology, ISRO Chairman K Kasturirangan and host of other dignitaries were on the dais. In my welcome speech I recited a few lines from Vajpayee's poetry, especially the one I have liked most: " Lord, do not take me so high that I cannot hug my people on the ground".

He was a tallest human being, a poet, a great parliamentarian, an extraordinary orator, and a debater with dignity hurting none, not even the opponents. His achievement as Prime Minister is too well known: Nuclear tests, The Lahore summit, Kargil War, National Highway Project, Foreign Policy, Economic Reforms, and so on, and faced difficult situation with calmness and dignity such as India Airlines hijack, attack on Parliament, Gujarat Violence. He was a real jewel of India-Bharata Ratna.

May he attain sadgati.
Om Swami (2014): If Truth Be Told, a monk's memoir. Harper Collins. Pp.253. Rs.499.

Of late I have been seeing here and there , in the magazines, writings of one Om Swami on the topics of spirituality, and our ancient wisdom. I was wholly impressed by his clarity, sincerity and thoroughness. I was wondering who is this Swamy suddenly appearing out of the blue as it were. Last week I had a visitor at home who asked me to suggest him a book that impressed me most. Having replied I asked him the same question. He suggested the above book, an autobiography of a monk. I got the book online and started reading and finished it almost at a stretch in spite of my age and ailments, such is the power of his writing, of his honesty.

It is a story of a man(Amit Sharma) from Haryana who at his eighteenth year heads to Australia, gets his bachelor degree in Business and an MBA from Sydney and with his knowledge of computer programming sets up business in software in Australia and later in Canada, UK, US and India , becomes a multimillionaire at the age of 26, and by the age of 30, having provided for his parents and sibling comfort through out their life , gifts all his wealth to a third person, heads to Himalayas to see God that was his goal right from his early childhood. Having studied all the scriptures already, finds gurus in the Himalaya, does vigorous sadhana with rigorous discipline in the caves, often in most excruciating circumstances. In much less than 10 years God appears in front of him, hugs him and disappears. He was, to use a cliche, never the same man again. The scintillating experience of merging with infinity, of being one with all beings, living and nonliving. It was an indescribable 'experience', impossible to put it in words, as, an Upanishad says, no word and mind can reach it, much less comprehend and even approximate It. Yet, the author was able to script It in few words that is spell binding.

Some quotes from the end pages: " ..... to be enlightened means to live in the light of love, compassion and truthfulness." "Your knowledge of rituals and the scriptures, the time you spend in place of worship, the money you raise for religious causes - such things, I am sorry to tell you, have absolutely no connection with God unless the heart is open to the divine." "...... objective of religious acts is to purify yourself and cultivate compassion and gratitude." : "We need both spirituality and science." ".. truth is not a one-size-fits all. It's a personal matter, a private affair. Einstein found it in a laboratory. Buddha found it under a tree. Edison found it in a light bulb, ....." "A sense of fulfillment comes from walking your own path. For some it may be meditation, for others it may be music, dancing, painting, writing or reading. Find what makes you happy and pursue it." " I've given you my truth. Go, discover yours."

He lives in his ashram at the foothills of Himalayas. His blog, omswami.com, where he writes every week, gets more than a million views annually, says the blurb. The latest I saw was more of a dialogue, question and answers, than a discourse. It was fresh and profound. He is all over the globe, sharing his experience and conducting meditation camps.
Karnataka Doctors on Strike.

Needle of Suspicion won't cure anything!

Doctors in Private Establishment have stuck their work over the Karnataka Private Medical Establishment Act( strictly speaking it is neither the Act or the Bill as it is yet to be introduced in the legislature) which the Government would like to bring to regulate private doctors in "inhuman" ways on the charge that those doctors exploit patients to earn huge money for themselves. Patients are left in a lurch as they are hesitant to go to Government Hospital because of poor facility or corruption there and the other course of seeking Private Centers are closed due to strike.

The Private doctors argue that there are already stringent bodies to regulate and monitor them such as IMA, Consumer Courts and Civil and Criminal Courts and there is no need to have yet another Body. Government argues that exploitation is continuing in spite of those Bodies and hence the new regulation to put stringent measures to curb the malpractices. But, what is the guarantee that even the Bodies created by KPME Act also won't be equally, if not more, corrupt as the other existing Bodies? It would be one more center to harass private establishments.

There are good and bad in both Private and Government medical establishments, may be the bad is increasing in both the sector of late. The medicine you offer(KPME) to cure that can not be worse than a disease. Some of the Private Medical Facility in Karnataka have made good name in the national and even International level, patients from different part of the world come to Bangalore and other centers in Karnataka and return with high praises for the cost and facility here, please do not destroy that. Punish the guilty soon and harsh in both the sector but encourage the good ones equally soon and wholeheartedly in both the sector.

The way the Government is handling the crisis is giving raise to all sort of suspicion, the latest one going round is that Rs 500 crore was asked for Election Fund and when the Private Managements did not accede the KPME is brought in, the Management even went to the Command at the Center and there too they were told to settle at the local level! The delay may further confirm the the rumor round. I hope and wish that the rumor is unfounded and somebody among the doctors who are involved should come out boldly either way (Yes or No) to the rumor for the sake of social health.

Of Crime, Government and Investigation.

People of eminence are shot dead. Investigation into crime is ordered by the Government through its agencies (like CID, SIT). Investigation goes on and on, years after years and yet no report sees the light of the day. Is our Police so inefficient, their training is of so very poor quality or passed them and got into their positions thereon through bribes(cf. KPSC and VYAPAM scams)? Or, even if there are efficient ones they are either sidetracked or coerced to act in a particular way including delaying the process? Of course, there are cases where police have acted swiftly and brought the culprit to book in weeks, however rare such cases may be. Yet, it is only half the story. The other half belong , in both the cases of their success and failure, it appears, to the agencies' boss, the Government. Revelation or not of the findings or even proceeding with the investigation depend on its advantage to the Party in governance.

When the so called leftist wing is in charge of the government, if the investigation's initial findings reveal the hand of other than rightist elements, its finding is not allowed to conclude or investigation itself is not proceeded with till the election is over so that it can take advantage of the people's suspicion and keep on blaming the rightist element for the killing and use it to its advantage during election canvas. However, if the initial finding reveal rightist element in the murder, investigation is proceeded with God's speed and the culprit is booked soon. Similarly, if the so called rightist wing is in Power, investigation hints at leftist element in the killing, investigation is proceeded speedily and all action is taken to its end; however, if investigation hints at rightist element in the crime, the investigation is either buried or delayed till the election to take advantage to blame the opponent.

Search for truth, 'intellectuals' including media bemoaning, people's aspiration hardly matters for politicians on these matters at these times as they know that it has no bearings, like the corruption, on people's voting during election.

Only, people's faith in the time honoured institutions get weakened paving way for anarchy and even mutinies by such action of politicians in Power.
Awakening Darkness !

A political naiveté, (naive inspite of heavy political surroundings for long years), who is also a Vice President of a National Party, made a statement other day in his Party Forum in Tamil Nadu that he is studying Upanishads to take on RSS and BJP and the Upanishads talk of equality which the RSS/BJP abhor. You cannot bank on Upanishads to counter as Upanishads are apolitical. Upanishads main concern is on Ultimate/Supreme Reality and Its relation to Life and World, and individual transformation; there is hardly any political thoughts and practices mentioned directly. The equality they talk of is of a totally different kind than found in the contemporary discourses, in the former it refers to the equality in the attainment of divinity and divine grace whereas in the latter it amounts to silting-up-some-and-hammer-down-some type, in practice, although different in its preaching.

He can find political thoughts and practices in umpteen number of other works such as, to name only the few, Ramayana(ayodhya kanda in particular), Mahabharata(Bhisma Parva), Vidura(viduraniti) Kautilya(Artha shastra), Manu(dharmashastra) and so on. He could do well to go through them, adapt them to suit present condition and work on the welfare of people and society as well on his own transformation using those thoughts and practices rather than take on somebody with it. Himself and his Party will again have a bright future if he does so.
Jaggi Vasudev's latest book:

INNER ENGINEERING - Yogi's Guide to Joy by Sadhguru. Penguin, 2016, Pp.271, Rs.299.

This is a fascinating work, full of insights and practices for a personal growth towards highest human endeavour.

Sri Jaggi Vasudev calls himself Sadhguru, an eight letter word as he would not want to use a four letter word, guru, he says! He hails from Mysore, graduated in English Literature from Mysore University. His early guru was Malladihalli Swamy, as Swamy is popularly known, his name being Raghavendra Rao, pen name being tiruka. Later guru was Palini Swamy in Tamilnadu. Sadhguru has a very long practice of Yoga,( nearly 35 years, although he was having intense spiritual experiences since childhood) and in fact to perfect his speciality Yoga, Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya he took 21 years to suit it to propagate for the benefit of others. He built the Isha Yogic Centre and in it the magnificent Dhyanalinga Yogic Temple housing a 13 feet and 9 inches Linga under a 76 ft. high dome in Velliangiri Hills near Coimbatore. Now his ashrama is a throbbing centre of yogic practice as well as a huge environmental initiatives along with variety of Community Services not only in the state of Tamilnadu but also all over the world. Recently, in 2017, he was conferred Padma Vibhushan Award by the Government of India.

There are people who would do intense spiritual practice, sadhana, for the attainment, and there are people who on its own have intense and series of spiritual experiences that turn them to spiritual practices to stabilise such experiences. Sri. Jaggi Vasudev belong to the latter category. Since childhood he used to have experiences of being one with the cosmos without the boundary between himself and the world, being limitless. The book is an exquisite expression of what all he underwent and what transformed eventually resulting in what he is and what he is doing today.

Everyone can get into such an existential state where he/she is being one with all the beings-living and nonliving- in the world in a heightened frequency of responding and accomplishing in peace and joy. The book is replete with his personal experiences, encounters with the people around with umpteen number of anecdotes that hits you with fresh insights and understanding. Once, he had a deep cut till the bone in the calf muscle, went to a village medical centre that has run out anaesthetic facility, underwent 52 sutures at length, chatting all along with the doctor, and when the doctor asked him is he not having any pain for which Sadguru remarks that pain is natural and it is good as it warns and protects organisms but suffering is a self creation. Another time in Mount Kailash how he recharged himself with the vibrations of mystique knowledge surrounding the mountain atop, in front of 200 people, and resounded himself with robust health and joy is heart warming. He had been seeing a mountain in his eyes since he was young, an urge made him search for it where he finally got the Velliangiri Hill which is situated in such a geographical condition ideally suitable for spiritual practice. The story of four idiots - jnana, bhakti, karma and kriya yogas - who always condemn each other but got realisation only when they came together is illuminative.

The song of the book is that there is a world beyond what our Body (Senses) and Mind (Intellect and Emotions) have fetched us and that world is the home of all creation from which we all came and are sustained, a source of immense and boundless energy. Everyone can access that world and reap immeasurable benefits in terms of peace, joy and limitless attainments, a limitless, boundless, joyful beings we all can become. Our senses and mind are outer bound cannot experience the inner world and what is more they override us. Being should take charge of them, be a master of them and use them as tools, rise them higher to be sensitive to the inner world as well. As such, the book is not a mere narration of the life and works but a practical cookbook to help access that energy. Every section under Body, Mind, Energy and Joy is replete with tiny, simple and yet powerful mental exercises to introduces us to that world beyond, a world which is not transcendental but homecoming. The way out for the
mess we are in is way in. He presents a technology to go in.

The book is written in an easy style with full of wits and humours, stories and anecdotes and evidences from Science. Production of the book is also creative with different types and shades for stories, anecdotes and exercises. We are grateful to the author for giving us such a book of wisdom and practice. Publisher, Penguin, should be congratulated for their creative designing and production of the book.

A Quote:

"I am often told by people that I seem to be a "modern" guru. My response to that observation is that I am neither modern nor ancient, neither new age or old age. I am contemporary, and that is how every guru has always been. Only scholars, pundits, and theologians are capable of being ancient or modern. A philosophy or belief system can be old or new. But gurus are always contemporary."

ಮನಸ್ಸೆಂಬು ಇಲ್ಲ, ಅದು ಭ್ರಮೆ (Mind is a myth) ಎಂದು ಕೆಲವು

ASKEW - A Short Biography of Bangalore by T. J. S. George.

I was eager to read this book for two reasons: one, I have been living in Bangalore since January 1965, except for four years during 1973-77 when I was away, and was curious to know how my nearly fifty years of Bangalore is figured in the mind of one of its veteran. Second, I am an admirer of George and his writings, I hardly missed reading his Sunday column in The New Indian Express. Having read the book now I am enriched, enthused and agitated. Such is the power of his writing.

When Kempe Gowda, fabled founder of Bangalore set out to build his dream capital in the 1530s, says George, his mother gave him two instructions: (Build lakes, plant trees) and Gowda promptly made hundred lakes and lined pathways with wide, leafy trees. George traces eloquently how eventually Bangalore became a pensioner's paradise with a salubrious climate, well laid out locality such as Jayanagar, Malleswaram and Basavanagudi with their own unique characteristics, how public sector giants like HAL and HMT came without causing environmental and traffic hazards as they had built their own colony for their employees' residence and work.

George then introduces the horrors of Bangalore that struck: the Whitefield and the Sarjapur monstrosities, unplanned and unbridled, and the fickle nature if IT jobs. George etches them so brilliantly that it leaves us stunned and sad. Crooked politicians, bureaucrats and fixers joined hands in the mela to pocket their loot. Crime, congestions and traffic jams became order of the day. Lakes vanished in large numbers and the few remained are highly polluted thanks to land mafia, trees destroyed in large number too for 'development'(whose?). Several non governmental people who left their lucrative jobs abroad to dedicate themselves to salvage Bangalore, struggled hard to convince and steer the Government to act, although achieved some success to establish a Task Force when a Chief Minister was there but went into cold storage when the next Chief Minster came as he was whispered by the bureaucrat that the credit would go to the predecessor. George also narrates in a most matter of fact way how a thoroughly unproductive and unnecessary projects like National College flyover and Tagore Circle Underpass was undertaken despite public protest just to make money for themselves i.e politicians, bureaucrats and builder nexus.

George notes poignantly, "It is perhaps woven into the texture of the human mind to build and enjoy, then to overbuild and suffer, then to collapse and complain, and then to become argumentative about what happened". Yet, it need not be always so although it is invariably so in India. George narrates the cities abroad, some of them he lived there for some tome, like Hong Kong and New York, when they are faced with the modern horrors of cities, they did wake up and redeemed the situation in a most astounding way: by building huge global art, performing art, centres at their outskirts and reclaimed the glory, the 'soul' of the city. "Life begins eternally" George quotes H G Wells. We are nowhere near it, we allowed it to be doomed, like Bombay and Patna, says George.

George illustrates with few case studies how race discrimination against Black 'Africans' practiced in Bangalore which is indeed very distressing and surely a black spot on Bangaloreans.

The most positive, delightful and lip licking part is Bangalore restaurants. George enunciates brilliantly the nature and growth of delicious eateries in Bangalore starting from Udupi Hotels, Brahmins' Coffee Bar, Vidyarthi Bhavan, MTR, Veena Stores to Maiyas, Darshanis, Nammuras, By 2s. In each, George introduces the person involved, the reason behind them, the struggles and toils including a tragedy of one of them for trying to expose the malpractices and inclusion of harmful chemicals in food by Hoteliers. Equally illuminative is the introduction of literary figures, and performing arts such as Ramanavami Music Festivals and Rangashankara ventures in Bangalore.

Most surprising is the detail life sketches of sensitive, educated and intelligent two sons, one each of the two most successful business magnates of Bangalore. I wonder why they are here. Soon I realised that although they have rich parentage in Bangalore with enormous wealth, they have decided to set up their projects abroad, probably realising the hopelessness of honest business venture here. This is perhaps the omen, a harbinger of things to come in Bangalore.

Bangalore is becoming bad to worse with hardly any attempts to stem the rot by the powers that be. George quotes V Balasubramanian, former additional chief secretary of Karnataka, saying that "water scarcity and contamination will force the government to evacuate half of Bangalore's population by 2023. Bangalore is growing without realising that it is actually dying". George ends up by saying " Bangaloreans are no longer citizens; they are digits, statistics, percentages and fractions for knaves to make profits from. Dawn never comes to the late riser".

The sub title of the book is 'Short Biography of Bangalore' and yet it is very comprehensive and wholesome account thanks to George's extraordinary facility in language that is full of grace, brevity and yet thoroughly evocative. The book is verily a opening of eyes to the problems and prospects of Bangalore.

The book is a must read for all bureaucrats and politicians and 'fixers' in Bangalore so that let them think that they cannot get away with whatever ills they do as people are becoming aware, and must also be read by all citizens of Bangalore so that their awareness can turn into action to force the emergence of leaders who are honest and have caliber to hold the bull by its horns and steer the pathway to the redemption of Bangalore.
Karnataka Minister for Higher Education Sri Basavaraj Rayareddy said today that the School of Economics modelled after London School of Economics will be started from the next academic year in the 50 acre Bangalore University Campus at Jnanabharati and would be named after Babasaheb Ambedkar( Ambedkar School of Economics). I was pleasantly surprised to see this morning Vishwavani, a Kannada newspaper, devoting the whole issue to the works of ISKCON Akshayapatra Scheme where millions of school going children are fed everyday and the celebration of their two billion meals offered till date under the scheme.

The major news for the newspaper has always been the politics and we were used to read every morning the political events which are normally full of negatives. Rajaji ( C Rajagopalachari ) had once said that we wake up every morning to read crimes and evils of the world in newspaper and go to offices with bad state of mind. Instead, he suggested, that why cannot the papers be published in the evenings.

Social and cultural events hardly makes a headline, much less occupy the whole of newspaper as Vishwavani did today. The ISKCON work and the commemoration of an event today richly deserves our whole attention and appreciation, and the Vishwavani helped us to just do that. The studies have shown that offering one good, nutritious meal a day by Akshayapatra Scheme has shown improvements in children's attention and attendance in the class. Strong, healthy and intelligent people is a great asset in nation building.

Kudos to Sri. Vishweshwara Bhat, the Editor, and his team for giving us such a refreshing treat this morning worthy of remembering, cherishing and even inspiring people to contribute their bit to the cause. Of course the usual "news" you have relegated to the secondary importance by putting them in Supplement. For once social and cultural development made not only the headline but all the lines in a newspaper.
